We will discuss two case reports of a therapy for snoring problem based on Traditional Chinese Medicine.
The anti-snoring TCM-formula "Han Li Ting" was first investigated in China in a clinical trial in 1994 (source: Document of Drug Approval List, Beijing).
"Han Li Ting" contains the following ingredients:
- Shan Yao (Radix Dioscoriae Oppositae)
- Yan Cao (upper part of Shan Yao)
- Gan You (Glycerine)
- Zheng Liu Shui (Aqua Destillata)
According to the theory of Traditional Chinese Medicine, the combination of the herbs Yan Cao and Shan Yao clears the heat and opens the orifices. It also calms the Heart and stops snoring.
In the above mentioned clinical trial "Han Li Ting" was given to 338 persons with snoring problems, 226 males and 77 females; of them, 228 persons were between 20 to 49 years old and 110 persons were between 50 and 65 years. Every night before sleeping two to four drops were administered into each nostril and one treatment course lasted for 30 days.
Trial analysis gave the following results: remarkable improvement was recorded in 44 (13 %) cases, improvement in 280 (82.8 %) cases, failure in 14 (4.2 %) cases.
(Report of Clinical Trial of "Han Li Ting", 1994, (1): 2 )
The first patient using "anti-snoring nose drops" (Han Li Ting),was a Dutch father whose children complained about daddy’s excessive snoring during the night.
His wife did not dare to mention this problem, she was woken up several times in the night, but then she spoke out openly, once her children had put attention to this problem. Immediately three days after the man used the anti-snoring nose drops, the wife found a remarkable amelioration, the intensity of the snoring decreased and the frequency of snoring was also less. During two successive weeks the drops were taken every night and then due to the overwhelming success these were quickly forgotten.
Nevertheless, the suppressive effect of the remedy on the snoring lasted for more than two months. Then the "anti-snoring nose drops" should be taken again.
The second patient, a middle-aged man using the "anti-snoring nose drops" (Han Li Ting) had tried almost everything against snoring: consultation of an ENT specialist for ‘hidden allergies’, western medication in combination with nose-sprays and many kinds of alternative remedies. And nothing had really helped so far. In this case, the amelioration of the problem was almost instantly. The man declared, that when he took the drops before sleeping the effect lasted for at least seven hours, so more than enough for a sound sleep. He and his partner were very satisfied.
After a few months taking the "anti-snoring nose drops", however, he felt a certain habituation, as is often seen with Chinese herbal medication. So he was advised to stop for a few weeks and then to continue again. Again, the remedy showed its snoring-suppressive effects almost instantly and profoundly. Both case reports proved that the "anti-snoring nose drops" (Han Li Ting) could be a successful Traditional Chinese Medicine remedy against snoring.
